WORK NOTES:

I started this work in spring 1986, and finished it in Tanglewood in the summer when I was a Fellow there. It shows an early influence drawn from my studies of the music of Elliott Carter. I wrote the work for a divided chamber ensemble, with its two ensembles featuring very different harmonies and rhythms. This must have been my very first use of partitioned intervals in any work of mine.

The image is from Paul Klee, appropriate as Klee’s work was a very early visual influence in my thinking about music.
